Recommended Reading

The first book I'll mention is not for the faint of heart.  This is a textbook, and meant for the professional trainer, regardless of the species being trained.  It was the first book I read; required reading to become trainer level at my first job:
Animal Training; Successful Animal Management through Positive Reinforcement
by Ken Ramirez

The second most influential book is by an author who also started her career out as a marine mammal trainer.  She now is very active in the dog training world, and even has her own academy to educate new dog trainers.
Dong Shoot the Dog
by Karen Pryor

Her most recent book is also a gem.
Reaching the Animal Mind
by Karen Pryor

The next book is written by a dog trainer with a lot of experience working with reactive dogs.  I had the privilege of working with this trainer out in PA for a few months.  She helped Aggie and me start our journey together, and I consider her both my mentor and friend.  I still refer to her book on a regular basis.
Scaredy Dog
by Ali Brown

Much like Karen Pryor, I would recommend anything written by Patricia McConnell.  I enjoyed one of her books, and plan to read another.  Also, she has a blog worth checking out:

And a couple of her most popular (and well written) books:
The Other End of the Leash
by Patricia McConnell
For the Love of a Dog; Understanding Emotion in You and Your Best Friend
by Patricia McConnell

Please use the Contacts page to email me any other books you'd recommend.  They may end up on this page!
